Shared Perspectives UPDATE…

Three Shared Perspectives talks are scheduled for the upcoming weeks!
Monday, August 22nd at 7pm at the Sky Dragon,
Saturday, August 27 at 2pm at the Intolerant Gallery,
Monday, September 12 at 7pm at the Sky Dragon
These talks have been great opportunities to listen and engage, and turn around ideas in a willing, diverse and interesting group of people, every time, and have been very well received. Don’t miss what’s coming up! Please keep yourselves apprised on the website at hamiltonfreeskool.org/sharedperspectives.
For those who (is it possible?) are still not sure, the spirit of the Shared Perspectives series of talks is that all people, at all points in life, have a perspective of value to share – that we lose out, big time, by marginalising people of one age or another, young or old, and that there is a great deal to gain by participating in dialogues across the years. Each talk features someone offering their answers to the questions of what they think of this concept, what they have themselves have learned, what it is like to be where they are at, and what, if given the chance, would they want to share, given what their perspective affords them.
Any questions, to suggest a talk (by yourself or by someone we should approach) or for more information, please feel free to email hamiltonfreeskool@gmail.org, or rache.nolan@gmail.org.
On to the schedule of events!

At 27 King William, at the Sky Dragon Centre (which is closed for renovations but open for…Hamilton Freeskool!) on August 22nd at 7pm we have a really cool event featuring, in fact, TWO perspectives: from mother and daughterDiane and Keisha (yes, that’s the Keisha Neoma-Quinn) will interview each other on what it was like growing up, what they learn from each other, and more. Don’t miss this one, it is sure to be a rare and interesting event.
The following Saturday at 2pm, we use Art as Perspective – Dawn at the Intolerant Gallery on King Street (239 King Street East, across from Ferguson Station) will be facilitating a conversation about control in relationships, using an art exhibition including original works on the subject. Listening/participating in this dialogue is sure to be thought provoking, and is part of an important topic for discussion and awareness in our community as in every community. Addictive, co-dependent and abusive paradigms, as well as healthy ones, will be discussed, and beautiful art will be shared.

We are very lucky to have the very learned speaker George Sorger featured on Monday, September 12 at 7pm at the Sky Dragon. George has swaths of knowledge and experience relating to South American history, as well as South American-Canadian history – he will be speaking on the colonialist legacies and the importance of a historical perspective, as well as adding his own 73 years of life experiences into the mix. Definitely come out for this educational and interesting dialogue.
Stay tuned for additions to the schedule for this Freeskool series, and please feel very invited to get in touch with questions or ideas.

Radical Practical Solidarity UPDATE!

Film Screening & Discussion: Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance

Monday July 25th 6-9pm

Skydragon Centre: 27 King William St. Hamilton

Background

Alanis Obomsawin’s award winning documentary about the 1990 Oka Crisis, featuring in depth footage of the 78 day standoff involving Mohawks, Police & Military, as well as background to the standoff, including treaties, agreements, and the history of land appropriation.

The screening of this documentary follows last term’s screening of Sewatokwa-tshera’t: The Dish With One Spoon, by Dr Dawn Martin-Hill, regarding Six Nations land reclamation at Kanonhstaton/Caledonia.

In our discussion we will consider colonialism, land expropriation, blacklash, racism, and the role of the police and military in Indigenous land occupations, as well as the roles and reactions of government officials and non-Native neighbouring communities, paying attention to the continuity and consistency with recent, ongoing, and contemporary struggles for indigenous land and sovereignty.

It is my hope that by recognizing these connections we can better understand contemporary struggles and how to move forward, rooted in a critical understanding of colonial histories and ongoing injustices.

This film screening is brought to you by Hamiton FreeSkool’s Practical Solidarity, and the Hamilton Centre for Teaching Peace as part of Edu-Macation Mondays.

For more information about this event or additional Practical Solidarity events contact Niki: csn.thorne@gmail.com

Sharing Our Perspectives: Cross-General Dialogues

Watch this space for updates on this Freeskool series, coming June 2011! Contact Rachel for proposals or questions.

Dear esteemed amazing purveyors of passionate perspective:
This spring/summer Hamilton Freeskool is presenting “Sharing Our Perspectives: Cross-Generational Dialogues.” I hope you will participate! It is certain to be inspiring, engaging, broadening, and, of course, free.

Intrigued? It’s a workshop/discussion series, led by individuals or groups who are offering us their perspective based on the lives that they have lived. Let’s start valuing the fact that all of us is only one age at a time, carrying one precious perspective: can we not share that, value it, and demand that we add to it? The fact is, each of us was born in a certain year, grew up through a given period, and has composed an individual history. This project is intended to enact radical inclusivity, with a focus on age. This is a call-out for participants.

Right now, we are lucky to have Ann from Simpler Thyme Farms who is excited to contribute to this project by presenting the opening workshop. Those who have not had the chance to talk to her are especially in for a treat. Her perspective on age, learning, permaculture, adapting and seeking exemplify the attitudes of inclusivity and sharing that this Freeskool series is all about. Age doesn’t need to be something glossed over and homogenised. It is valuable that we all are different ages. That is an asset to community.

Ann is in her 50s and, based on a guess that she’ll probably live to be about a hundred, keeps a running count of the number of days she has left to fill, each, with learning,  discovery and growth.

After being thus kicked off, we have the following proposed presentation/workshops, all to be conducted within the space of a few weeks in a celebration of life and each other and challenging ourselves:

Technological perspectives: A discussion of the history of some of today’s ubiquitous technology such as the Internet, from the facilitator’s point of view of being involved in computer use, programming, gaming and experiment since the 1980s.

The Air Apparent: An opportunity to discuss the mental space inhabited by parents, an obviously critical role in society I look forward to hearing explored.

Building perspective… with LEGO! A play-date, with the insight of some local young children front and centre.

A city’s generations: A conversation with at least one member of our city’s elderly population, an opportunity to get to know this city a little more broadly than the limited years of the younger population can grant.

Gimme Some Truth: Featuring the perspective of inhabiting the Global Village from the highschool bubble of a small Canadian town.

Each presentation in the series can and will vary in styles from workshops to discussions to lecture to interview according to what best suits the facilitators’ sharing of their perspective. All are conducted in the spirit of non-hierarchical, open and empowering learning.

If you or anyone you know might be interested in giving us a chance to learn from your own precious, unique perspective, please contact Freeskool! Or email me at rache.nolan@gmail.com for questions.
You have lived a unique life. We are interested in YOUR perspective. If you would like to join any of the existing series projects in the works or would like to propose your own, we will do everything we can to make you feel it is an environment where you would like to share yourself. And please, consider inviting your grandparents, friends, parents, nieces or nephews or children to participate. We want to hear from them, too.

I am excited for these dialogues and I hope you are too!

Keep attentive for further updates, and I look forward to hearing from you!

with furious love,

Rachel,
co-ordinating Sharing Our Perspectives: Cross-Generational Dialogues,
a project of Hamilton Freeskool!!!!

Dominion Launch Party: Climate Justice Special Issue

Hey FreeSkoolers,

feat. AngelHeartRiverWalker, Lee Reed, Kahsenniyo, and Testament

On Saturday, April 23rd at the Skydragon, Mayday Magazine, Hamilton FreeSkool’s Practical Solidarity, & the Peace Cafe are hosting a party to launch the special issue of the Dominion about climate change. For those of you who don’t know, The Dominion Media Co-op is one of the best news sources in the country today, and once a year they release a special issue going …further in depth on an issue. This year, that issue is Climate Justice, which is a big, complicated scary issue, and so we figured, what better way to introduce it to you all than to throw a big giant party with lots of radical hip hop and spoken word?

For those of you who don’t know them yet, The AngelHeartRiverwalker Project is rooted in Afro-Nativism from the North & South. This Duo is best known for their lyrical and musical contributions to the popular Red Slam Collective. The AngelHeart Riverwalker Project represents the best of Mahlikah Awe:ri’s poetic-rapology mixed with indigenous drum talk.  They offer great grooves, insightful lyrics, and they haven’t been in town for a while, so don’t miss this chance to catch them live!

Kahsenniyo is a spoken-word artist who will be weaving her thoughtful and elegant poetry through the themes of the evening, and Lee Reed will also be joining us on the stage, and he needs no introduction in this city.

Testament, of the hip-hop duo Test Their Logik, is a new addition to the bill. Check his work out here: http://www.myspace.com/testtheirlogik

Doors @ 8. $10/pwyc. No one turned away. Free Issue with admission.

For more details about the event and the performers, check out the facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=179229265461241

See you there!!

Full Signal Film Screening

Hey FreeSkool Fans!

This Friday from 6-9pm at the Jamesville Community Centre there will be a screening of the film Full Signal: The hidden costs of cell phones. Full Signal explores the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields associated with cellular phone infrastructure and other communications devices.

There will also be a discussion afterwards focussing on practical ways of reducing the exposure that you have to these fields. This screening and discussion will be facilitated by Elissa, who is a longtime activist on this subject and is very knowledgeable, so come on out if you’ve ever wondered what’s the deal with those antennas on the roofs of the buildings around downtown.

Also, have you checked out the website lately? There’s always cool stuff happening through FreeSkool, so maybe take a look: hamiltonfreeskool.org

Enjoy the spring!
